Day 7 - 02/27/2007

Apparently I have fat knees. Didn't know that, now I do.

I went to rehab today for my knee. I've been suffering from chronic patellar tendonitis for 20 months now and this is the third time I've tried physical therapy. My therapist was adjusting my knee, taking measurements and asking me whether it hurts there...or there or there or there. She says she's not sure what's going on in that the places my knee hurt isn't really the tendon but instead might be an inflammed fatty patch.

Huh?

So I asked her if she was saying I had fat knees. We both got a good laugh out of it, but now I'll be interested in seeing what my primary therapist says on Thursday.

Hmmmmm....I never knew one's knees could be fat, especially if the rest of the body isn't.

Day 6 - 02/26/2007

Almost skipped the day. I need to start doing this earlier in the day if I want to keep the string alive.

We went to Chuck E. Cheese's for dinner tonight to celebrate N's birthday. It wasn't our first choice, but it was his. Actually, he came into the bedroom at 7a this morning and, after looking out the window and seeing that the street had been plowed, asked us if we could go to Chuck E. Cheese's now.

Yes, N, of course we can.

Day 5 - 02/25/2007

Here's the way I look at life: The more you give, the more you get.

Just something to think about for the time being.

On an unrelated note, happy birthday, son. You're five today whether you like it or not. That means you need to start eating your fruits AND your vegetables. And no, we're not going to bribe you with more Webkinz.

Day 4 - 02/24/2007

Great day today, being a Saturday and all. The kids were up early and got their fix of their shows before I pulled them up from the basement and made them eat their sugar-laden cereal. M had a friend over so I made both of them get dressed before she got here. In the meantime, I used the quiet early morning silence to get some stuff done on iTriTracker I wasn't able to finish up last night.

After that I went out for a run. The thing that sucks about rehab is that I can only get one run in per week. I'd love to do more, but, seeing as I've been off the road for the past 18+ months, I realize that if I push it, it may be 24+ months before I'm back to any regular schedule.

N is getting excited about his birthday tomorrow. He turns five. We decided to get him a betta fish to match his sister's. You should have seen him at the pet store. He wouldn't let it go until he wanted to pick out the decoration to go in the fishbowl (which just happened to be the same as his big sister's, which I'm sure made both of them happy). Since the forecast for tomorrow is ice, sleet and other assorted wintry precipitation, we may not make it to Chuck E. Cheese's for his birthday dinner. Oh well, at least we already have the cake!

Day 3 - 02/23/2007

My mom dropped by this afternoon with my birthday present. I keep a running list throughout the year using Melon, adding to it when something strikes me. Somehow she ended up with it around Christmas-time (I didn't give it to her directly). Anyway, to make a long story short, she got me two books off the list: Eggs and Into the Wild.

Eggs is a cookbook dedicated to its namesake. I love to cook, as well as bake and am looking forward to cracking this book open. (Sorry about that.) While some might not enjoy cookbooks as one would a work of fiction (or non-fiction), to me there's nothing more satisfying than opening a cookbook and reading the recipes and thinking about the meals to come. Of course, they (hardly ever) turn out like they do in my head, but it's the overall process that I enjoy, not just the end result. (Another cookbook that I highly recommend is Shirley Corriher's Cookwise. It's part recipe, part instruction and all pleasure.)

That being said, I put it aside in favor of Into the Wild. It looks to be a quick read and I've already been sucked in. I guess that's a good thing as my current books (Alan Cooper's About Face and Jared Diamond's How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed) are both moving slowly along. As is The Chronicles of Narnia, but that's just because I'm only reading (on average) one chapter to the kids before bed. At this rate I may be done before the end of the school year and they can finally see The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (which I promised they could see after I finished reading the book to them). But then what?

Day 2 - 02/22/2007

Today is the start of a self-made three day weekend. I decided to take a day off from my day job to take care of some personal development items that I've been putting off for too long now. I can catch an hour or two here, but need a good solid chunk of time to get done the things that need to get done. Doing that on the weekends or on weeknights leaves me feeling a little guilty about neglecting the family.

Saturday mornings are when I get the bulk of my development work done. The kids are catching up on their shows and my wife is catching up on her sleep. The house is quiet and it provides a good environment in which to work. The same thing holds true for late night coding sessions, but unlike Fred Sanford -- whoops!, I mean Fred Sanford! -- at my age I can't afford to burn the candle at both ends, let alone up the side or down the middle. There's something about the late night hours and the prospect of getting *just one more thing done* before sacking that makes paying the price of staying up too late worth it.

Yes, I realize that staying up past 11p is normal to some, but for us peeps who get up at 630a, it's a tad bit too late to do consistently. Unless, of course, you're Thomas Edison who just [supposedly] cat-napped his life away.

Day 1 - 02/21/2007

Let me get right to the point: I turned 39 today. Not a milestone birthday by any means, but a day closer to the next age group none-the-less.

As a way to celebrate (or not), I decided I'd blog about my life as I approach the big 4-0. Yes, I realize 40 is the new 25 (or so I've been told), but it still represents a new decade (not to mention a trip to the DMV to renew my license).

I'll keep today short as it's getting late and Lost is about to start. Who am I kidding, I'm Tivoing it anyway and won't get around to watching it until tomorrow. This new time slot isn't doing my sleep cycle any good.

Anyway, that's what I'm here for. You never know what you'll find should you decide to make this worth your while. I may talk about my training log or any one of my other software ventures or I might share some stories and/or poems I've written over the years. Or I might just share with you the ramblings of a 39 year old mind trying to decide what to do when he grows up.

I tell you what: Don't expect too much from me and I won't expect too much from you in return. Deal? Good, now, let's get on with the show...
